Welcome to the RNLI Lerwick Lifeboat Website.
Named in honour of Sir Michael Vernon, (Chairman of the RNLI from June 1989 to June 1996), Severn Class RNLB Michael & Jane Vernon was funded by a local appeal, a gift from John Young, bequests from Eleanor Rennie and Ronald Fea, together with other gifts and legacies. She was built in 1997 and has been stationed in Lerwick since then.
The self-righting Severn class are the biggest boats in the RNLI fleet at 17m long, a draught of 1.4m and displacement of 40 tonne. They have a range of 250 nautical miles and a top speed of over 25kts. Normally carrying a crew of 6, they have a total capacity of 185 people.
