| Lerwick Lifeboat Rescues |

At around 15:10 Coast Guard paged LOM and requested launch of the Lerwick lifeboat to go to assistance of fishing boat Replenish 42 miles SE of Bard Head, taking water, 6 persons on board. 15:11 LOM telephoned Coxswain (Neil Clark) and paged crew. Lifeboat launched and proceeded to the scene. Coast Guard rescue helicopter LC en route with salvage pump. Due to heavy swell the helicopter was unable to lower pump on to casualty. Lifeboat arrived on scene at 17:02 and considered it too risky to transfer the salvage pump onto the casualty. The casualty's own bilge pumps appeared to be coping so it was agreed that the lifeboat would escort the casualty back to Lerwick. Arrived back at 20:26 and transferred salvage pump onto the casualty whilst alongside in Lerwick harbour. Completed pumping at 20:56. Shetland Coast Guard request launch to Russian factory trawler Kapitan Butrinov with sick man onboard in need of evacuation to hospital. Lifeboat launched. Arrived at scene at 02:05 and advised casualty to continue on present course as sea to rough to transfer. 02:15 Lifeboat called casualty and advised to alter course and speed and have pilot ladder positioned on starboard side. The casualty advised us to come alongside as the man was ready to be transferred. Went alongside and waited 3 times and still no sign of man. Finally arrived down ladder on the 4th approach. Casualty vessel turned hard to port with Lifeboat was maneuvering away from her resulting in damaging our rails. Arrived back in Lerwick and transferred sick man to ambulance. Shetland Coastguard contacted the LOM who telephoned them back to be advised the small local fishing boat "Gleaner" with 2 persons onboard, had fouled her propeller whilst working with creels in Dales Voe, just to the North of Lerwick and requested the Lerwick lifeboat to assist. Arrived on scene, all ok and casualty safely towed into Lerwick. Crew: Neil Clark , Bruce Leask, Ian Leask, Dieter Glaser, Marcus Thomson and Paul Hughson. |
Coast Guard requested launch to Ocean Sovereign broken down off Bressay Lighthouse. Lifeboat launched. Casualty's main engine had broken down so she was unable to proceed under her own power. Tow rope put onboard and Ocean Sovereign taken under tow by the Lerwick Lifeboat. Towed to Lerwick harbour. While securing Ocean Sovereign in Lerwick, the lifeboat was contacted by the coastguard. Coastguard had received a report of a sighting of red flares in the South of nesting area and asked the Lifeboat to investigate. Lifeboat asked by Coastguard to investigate report of sighting of red flares in South Nesting area. Coastal search carried out and Lifeboat checked 3 vessels which were in the area, but no vessel found in need of assistance. Lifeboat stood down by Coastguard at 20:55. Returned to station. Crew: Neil Clark , John Sinclair, Michael Grant, Bruce Leask, Stanley Hughson and Thomas Sinclair. |
Shetland Coastguard paged the LOM, who telephoned them back to be advised a small local pleasure boat with 4 persons onboard, had run out of fuel off Twageos, Lerwick south harbour and requested the Lifeboat to launch and assist. Lerwick Lifeboat launched and on scene at 13:23 with tow rope passed to casualty and advised coastguard that Lifeboat is heading for West Dock, Lerwick under tow. 13:40 lifeboat advised coastguard that casualty safely alongside and heading back to berth. Shetland coastguard paged LOM, who telephoned them back to be advised a Norwegian yacht named "Cambus May" with 2 persons onboard, had reported taking in water about 45 miles east of Lerwick. They requested the lifeboat to launch and assist. The weather was poor, SE force 7 with rough seas. 23:30 the Lerwick Lifeboat was launched with a ETA 2 hrs 15 min's. Coastguard called Lerwick lifeboat for position check and advised rescue helicopter Oscar Charlie had 14 miles to run to scene. Casualty is heading on a course of 300 degrees at 5 knots. Position checks with Lifeboat every 30 Min's. 02:15 Lifeboat advised coastguard to advise alongside casualty and will escort. Escorted the "Cambus May" to Skerries for shelter for a day or so to dry out and get some rest. Crew: Bruce Leask, Ian Leask, Marcus Thomason, Stanley Hughson and Robert Stout. |
Shetland coastguard paged the LOM, who telephoned them back to be advised a Norwegian yacht named "Aurora" with 1 person onboard, had reported a damaged mast, low on fuel and the engine not coping, southeast of Lerwick. They requested the Lerwick lifeboat to assist. Lifeboat called coastguard at 08:57 and advised arrived at scene and taking casualty in tow, proceeding to Lerwick. 10:44 Casualty "Aurora" alongside Victoria pier and all ok Crew: Bruce Leask, Ian Leask, Kenny Pearson, Thomas Sinclair, Robert Stout and Robert Garrick. |
Shetland coastguard paged LOM, Who telephoned them back to be advised the Banff registered but locally operated fishing vessel "Adele" with 4 persons onboard, was taking water 1 mile east of Mousa and requested the Lerwick lifeboat to assist. Lerwick lifeboat launched with a ETA of 30 min's to casualty. 03:50 Lifeboat arrived on scene and transferred salvage pump across to casualty and will escort to Lerwick. Lifeboat called "Adele" to advise will contact Lerwick Port Control for a suitable berth. Pump seemed to be coping so Lifeboat decided to berth casualty at Alexandra Wharf. Shetland coastguard paged LOM, Who telephoned them back to be advised they had received calls from the public advising the Banff registered fishing vessel "Discovery" with 5 persons onboard, was aground at Kirkness , Whalsay. The CG requested the lifeboat to launch and assist. No contact from casualty despite numerous VHF calls. 13:59 Lifeboat arrived on scene and casualty preparing towing bridle. "Discovery" confirmed bridle ready, try towing off. Not enough water underneath, vessel remained aground. Lifeboat advised they would try again as the tide rised. 14:38 Casualty towed off clear of rocks and casualty advised they were not taking in water so we proceeded to Lerwick. Casualty berthed at Alexandra Wharf pier at 15:00. Crew: Neil Clark, John Sinclair, Dieter Glaser, Marcus Thomason, Kenny Pearson and Robert Stout. |
Called by the CG to go to assistance of German Yacht "Tonga". Lost in fog just south of Lerwick. Fog was very thick. Crew paged. Bruce Leask Coxswain, launched at 11:05. Located casualty by radar and GPS position. Reached casualty at 11:18 and escorted them back to Lewick small boat harbour where they awaited better weather. Back at berth at 11:52.
