Weather: Good Visibility: Good Wind: Good
Sea State: Calm Time of Launch: 15:13:00 Return to Station: 18:30

At 1458 we received a request from Shetland Coastguard to launch and go to the assistance of the Peterhead fishing boat Rosemount, which had grounded on rocks known as the Skibby Baas, which lie in the North Entrance to Lerwick Harbour. Crew pagers were set off at 1508 and we were under way to the casualty at 1513. We arrived on scene at 1518 where we found the casualty to be resting on a rock with deep water at his bow and stern and with a 20-degree list to starboard. We immediately attached a tow and tried to pull him off but this attempt was unsuccessfull and with another hour of ebb tide remaining it was decided to leave him for a couple of hours and let the tide help to lift him before we try again. At 1735 the skipper of the Rosemount said he could feel her banging on the rock so we took the strain again and she came off at 1745. We retrieved the towrope and escorted the vessel to a berth at Holmsgarth where he was tied up at 1810. We returned to station and were tied up and ready for service at 1830.

Weather: Heavy Rain Visibility: Fair Wind: 15 - 20kts SW
Sea State: Mod 1 - 1.5m Time of Launch: 05;04 Return to Station: 07;50

At 0456 the Lifeboat Operations Manager was contacted by Shetland Coastguard, saying that the local whitefish boat ‘Tranquility' LK 63, with 6 persons on board had grounded somewhere round the ‘Moul of Eswick' North of Lerwick. The Operations Manager then set off the crew pagers at 0459 and the Lifeboat launched at 0504 and proceeded to the area. We arrived in the area at 0520 and found the casualty to be ashore on the ‘Inner Voder', just North of the Moul. At 0525 we attached a tow to the casualty and at 0542 the casualty came off. We continued to tow them slowly stern first in a Southerly direction until they had assessed the situation. They were found not to be taking any water, but the propeller had hit the bottom when they went ashore and were unsure of what damage had been done to it or the shaft, therefore it was decided that we should tow them to Lerwick. The tow was then transferred from their stern to bow and we proceeded to Lerwick at about 6 knots arriving at 0715. The casualty was secured alongside at 0735 and we were back in our berth at 0750.

At 1236 Shetland Coastguard contacted the Lifeboat Operations Manager to say that a Canoeist was in difficulties in Mousa Sound, could we launch? The Operations Manager set off the crew pagers at 1239 and we were under way at 1245. On root we were informed by Shetland Coastguard that three canoeists were involved, one of which had capsized and the person could not get back into the canoe, the person had been in the water for about 45 minutes before the alarm had been raised, they also informed us that the coast rescue team was on site and Coastguard Rescue 102 had been tasked as well and would probably be on scene before us. At 1255 we heard that Rescue 102 had picked up the casualty from the water and was heading for Lerwick and land at Clickimin. The coast rescue team were now with the other two persons and had retrieved their canoes from the water but the casualty's canoe was missing. We arrived on scene at 1315 and started a search of the area for the missing canoe, at 1320 Rescue 102 joined the search and at 1335 spotted the canoe 100 meters from the shore on Mousa, we retrieved the canoe at 1338 and headed for Lerwick, arriving at 1414. The canoe was landed and we were fuelled up and ready for service at 1420.

Sea State: Moderate 1.5 - 2.5m Time of Launch: 09;00 Return to Station: 10;55

At 0844 the Lifeboat Operations Manager was contacted by Shetland Coastguard to ask that the Lifeboat be launched to go to Fair Isle to pick up a 75 year old diabetic lady with a severe nose bleed. At the time the rescue helicopter could not land at Fair Isle because of the thick fog. The LOM set off the crew pagers at 0849 and the Lifeboat left her berth at 0900. At 0944 when we were in a position south east of Sumburgh head, we were informed that the helicopter had managed to land in Fair Isle and was picking up the casualty, their e.t.a. at Sumburgh was 1015. We were asked to remain in the Sumburgh area until the helicopter landed safely. At 1003 we heard that the helicopter had landed safely and we were stood down, we then headed for Lerwick arriving at 1055. We were fuelled up and ready for service again at 1145.

22nd May , 2009

Weather: Overcast, Showers Visibility: Very Good Wind: 0 - 10 kts E
Sea State: Calm 0 - 0.5m Time of Launch: 13;59 Return to Station: 16;22

At 1349 the LOM was contacted by Shetland Coastguard, saying that a small local fishing boat, LK783, was taking in water, off ‘Horse Island', just West of Sumburgh Head, and could we launch to assist. The LOM set off the crew pagers at 1351 and the Lifeboat launched at 1359. On route we received an update from the Coastguard saying that there was one person on board and that he had managed to beech the boat in West Voe at Sumburgh. A further update told us that the Sumburgh Coast Rescue Team were on scene and a small punt was being used to go out to him, we were asked to continue to the scene and stand by the casualty. We arrived on scene at 1450 and launched our ‘Y' boat to go and find out what assistance if any he required, while we stood off in deeper water. The ‘Y' boat radioed to say that he had fixed the leak, in an inboard pipe and he did not require any assistance, preferring to wait until he floated off with the next tide. This was conveyed to the Coastguard, who said they would prefer us to remain with the casualty until he floated off and escort him to the nearest Pier at Grutness. Meanwhile the person on the boat was on the telephone to the Coastguard telling them that another boat, the ‘Hope lll' would stand by them and escort them in, and to release the Lifeboat. Shortly after, Shetland Coastguard contacted us to convey this information and said they were happy for the ‘Hope lll' to stand by and at 1518 we were stood down. We retrieved our ‘Y' boat and set off for Lerwick at 1530, arriving at 1622. The Lifeboat was fuelled up and ready for service again at 1657.

At 1135 while on exercise in Dales Voe Shetland Coastguard contacted us that a diver on board the dive boat ‘Valkyrie' which was in Breiwick Bay was in need of evacuation to the hospital due to suspected Bends, and could we proceed as soon as possible. We immediately departed for the scene arriving at 1153. The male diver was transferred to the Lifeboat and we immediately headed for Lerwick, arriving at Victoria Pier at 1205 where he was transferred into the hands of the Ambulance Service. We returned to our berth and were refuelled and ready for service at 1225.

19th July , 2009

Weather: Part Cloudy Visibility:  Good Wind: 11 - 16 kts SE
Sea State: Slight 0.5 - 1.25m Time of Launch: 13;47 Return to Station: 15;30

At 1337 the Lifeboat Operations Manager was contacted by Shetland Coastguard to say that they had been contacted by mobile telephone from a small white yacht with two persons on board, South of Mousa. The yachts engine was on fire and they were considering abandoning to a dinghy. At this point all communication with them had been lost.

Some of the crew from the previous callout were still in the station and heard all this. They immediately donned gear again and headed for the boat, before being paged. The boat left the berth at 1347 and proceeded at full speed for the general area. Meanwhile Rescue 102 had been scrambled and was in the process of trying to identify which of the three yachts in the area was the one in difficulty. Without communication with the yacht this was difficult but they found one trying to launch a rubber dinghy and we headed for this one being the most obvious choice. We arrived alongside the yacht at 1400 and established that it was in fact the correct one. They had had a small fire somewhere on the engine but could not see what had caused it.

They requested that we put one of our crew aboard them to assist, as the female was not feeling very well, it was then decided to transfer the woman on to the lifeboat where she could be better monitored. The yacht then decided to head for Aith's Voe in Cunningsburgh where they had a mooring and we would escort them. During this time the female's condition was causing some concern and it was agreed to lift her of the Lifeboat by rescue 102 and transfer her to Tingwall where an ambulance would be waiting to take her to the Gilbert Bain Hospital for further treatment. She was lifted off the Lifeboat at 1432 and we proceeded to Aith's Voe where the yacht had managed to pick up their mooring and were secure. We sent the ‘Y' boat in with a fire extinguisher but it was not required as they had found that the source of the fire was a burned out starter motor which they had made safe. The crewman was picked up by the ‘Y' boat and returned to the Lifeboat. At 1455 we departed the area and headed for Lerwick, arriving at1530. The Lifeboat was fuelled and ready for service again at 1545.

Weather: Ugly, Threatening Sky Visibility:  Fair Wind: 17 - 21 kts NE
Sea State: Slight 0.1 - 0.5m Time of Launch: 12:26 Return to Station: 17:53

At 1216 the Lifeboat Operations Manager received a call from Shetland Coastguard requesting the launch of the Lifeboat to help search for a boat called ‘Still Waters II' which had broadcast a Mayday to say that it was sinking. The LOM paged the crew at 1220 and the Lifeboat launched at 1226. Initial information from the Coastguard was that the boat was somewhere South of Lerwick, and that we were to head south, keeping a watch for anything unusual. When we reached the South end of Mousa we were asked to continue a coastal search South along the coast to Sumburgh Head then North along the West side until we meet up with the Aith Lifeboat which was searching South along the coast From Vaila. At 1405 while searching in the South end of Cliff Sound, Shetland Coastguard gave us coordinates of a search area, totalling 36 square miles, to seaward of the South end of Burra. Aith Lifeboat was searching a similar area to the north of us and Rescue 102 was searching an area to the West and South of our areas. At 1555 we were told by Shetland Coastguard that on completion of our search pattern we were to head back to Lerwick, doing a coastal search on route. The Aith lifeboat had already started their return trip doing the same. At 1610 we completed our search pattern and headed for Lerwick along the coast. At 1710 Shetland Coastguard announced that the boat had been found safe and sound in Scalloway Harbour and we were stood down. We arrived back in our berth at 1753 and were fuelled up and ready for service again at 1825.

Weather: Part Cloudy Visibility:  Good Wind: 11 - 16 kts SSW
Sea State: Slight 0.0 - 0.1m Time of Launch: 22:43 Return to Station: 00:25

At 2236 the Lifeboat Operations Manager received a call from Shetland Coastguard informing him that a MFV called ‘Serenity' BF24 was taking in water fast in a position 6.5 miles North of Lerwick, after hitting rocks, could we launch and assist. The LOM informed the crew who were still in the station after an exercise earlier that night. The Lifeboat launched at 2243 and met the ‘Serenity' about 1.5 miles North of the ‘Brethren Rocks' heading south. We immediately went alongside and transferred the salvage pump and two crewmembers to the vessel to try and help pumping out. The casualty by this time was very low in the water with an estimated 4 ft of water in the hold. Unfortunately the starting chord on the salvage pump broke on the first attempt to start it and we had to go back alongside to pass equipment to effect a repair. By the time we reached the North entrance to the harbour the decks of the casualty was awash and it was decided the best place to berth him would be on the outside of the South breakwater where he could be beached to prevent him sinking. The Lerwick Fire Service was waiting on the pier and proceeded to pump him out. We returned to our berth and after recovering our salvage pump from the casualty we were fuelled up and ready for service again at 0025.

Weather: Squally Visibility:  Good Wind: 17 - 21 kts SSE
Sea State: Slight 0.5 - 1.25m Time of Launch: 05:40 Return to Station: 08:10

At 0524 the crew and LOM were paged by Shetland Coastguard requesting immediate launch to go to the assistance of the ‘Gerda Saele' with 4 POB which had broken down to the West of the ‘Voder' rock and was drifting in a Northerly direction. The Lifeboat launched at 0540 and proceeded to the scene, arriving at 0605. While on passage the casualty had managed to drop their anchor and it was holding. On arrival at the casualty a tow was passed and we held the casualty while they retrieved their anchor, this took a little time as their cable jammed in the winch and the anchor had to be released again to get it out. The tow to Lerwick started at 0617 where we arrived at 0740 and the tow was passed to the Harbour boat ‘Knab' who berthed her at the Shetland Catch Pier. We returned to station at 0810 and were fuelled up and ready for service again at 0825.

Weather: Rain Visibility:  Poor Wind: 28 - 33 kts SW
Sea State: Slight 2.5 - 4m Time of Launch: 20:00 Return to Station: 20:49

At 1952 Shetland Coastguard set of the pagers requesting we launch to go to the assistance of the MFV Guardian Angell, LK 272 which had reported that they had broken down half a mile South West of the point of the Knab while approaching Lerwick Harbour and were drifting ashore quickly. The crew assembled and we launched at 2000 arriving at the casualty at 2005. On arriving on scene we found that the MFV Venturous LK 75 had the casualty under tow and were heading in to Lerwick. We escorted them to the North Harbour where the Venturous released the tow and we secured ourselves alongside the casualty and took them alongside the quay where Coastguard personnel were waiting to take ropes. Once secure to the quay we departed and were back in our berth at 2049 and were ready for service again at 2102.
