| Lerwick Lifeboat Rescues |
Names of casualties are not quoted in these brief reports. | |||||||||||||
At 1853 the Lifeboat Operations Manager was contacted by Shetland Coastguard, saying that a red flare had been sighted SE of Mousa and could we launch and investigate. The LOM set off the crew pagers at 1855 and we were under way at 1905 arriving on scene at 1935. We immediately started a box search to the south east of Mousa, ending at 2110. We then started a shoreline search of Mousa and the mainland shore from Noness to Helliness. Nothing was found and we were stood down at 2210, arriving back in our berth at 2230. We were re-fuelled and ready for service again at 2240 Crew: Bruce Leask, John Sinclair, Ian Leask, Stanley Hughson, Tam Sinclair, Robert Stout. |
At 0605 the Lifeboat Operations Manager received a request from Shetland Coastguard that we launch to go to the assistance of a Danish Fishing Vessel, the ‘Teide' L155 from Oddesund with 6 persons on board, which had wound up her propeller in a position 53 nautical miles North East of Lerwick, and with worsening conditions forecast and no other vessel in the area it was agreed we launch. The LOM set of the crew pagers and we were under way at 0625. We reached the vessel at 0847 in a position 3.5 miles further north than the original position and a tow was secured at 0914. With the conditions at the time, the safest speed to proceed was 3kts, which meant we were in for a long tow to Lerwick as it was considered unsafe to try and tow him to into Baltasound as the sea was lying right on to the South entrance and the casualty had no steerage and was drawing almost 5meters of water. We eventually arrived in Lerwick at 0235 after a 17 and a half hour tow and berthed the casualty at the Holmsgarth pier arriving back on station at 0300. We were fuelled up and ready for service at 0345. Crew: Bruce Leask, John Sinclair, Ian Leask, Garry Bremner, Robert Garrick, Paul Hughson. |
At 2229 the Lifeboat Operations Manager was contacted by Shetland Coastguard to say that there was a person in the sea in the Albert Dock. The LOM set off the crew pagers at 2231 and we were under way at 2240. We were informed that the person had fallen between two fishing boats, ‘Sunrise' FR359 and ‘Lynden' FR151 that were berthed half way along the quay on the West side of Albert Dock. We arrived on scene at 2242 to find that the small inflatable from the SIC ferry ‘Leirna' had recovered the person from the water and we escorted them round to the old Bressay slip in the Small Boat Harbour where the ambulance service were waiting and the person was handed over to them. We were back on station at 2246 and ready for service again at 2250. Crew: Bruce Leask, John Sinclair, Ian Leask, Sammy Drommond, Gareth Geddes, Paul Hughson, Robert Stout. |
The Lifeboat Operations Manager was contacted by Shetland Coastguard at 2255 to say that the fishing vessel ‘Aquarius' BF89 with 6 persons on board had broken down off the fish market in Lerwick and was drifting North through the harbour. The LOM set off the crew pagers at 2257 and we were under way at 2305. By the time we got to the casualty at 2308 she had drifted on to a rock, which lies just South of the island of Cruister, the Shetland Islands Council Ferry ‘Leirna' had a rope on her but did not have the power to stop her drifting on to the rock. The rope to the Leirna was released and we immediately attached a tow to the stern of the vessel and proceeded to pull but before we could move her the towrope parted. We rigged a second tow, this time to the bow of the casualty and proceeded to pull again and she came clear at 2346. The intention had been to hand her over to the Harbour tug ‘Knab' who would guide her alongside but the skipper came on the VHF to say that he had regained power and could now motor ahead and astern and would proceed under his own power to the fish market, there for the tow was released at 2355 and we stood buy until she was safely berthed at the fish market at 0010. We returned to station at 0015 and were ready for service again at 0045. Crew: Bruce Leask, John Sinclair, Ian Leask, Tam Sinclair, Garry Bremner, Chris Kidd. |
